Dr. Roisin Mc Mackin

Dr Roisin McMackin was awarded a PhD in Clinical Medicine in 2021 from Trinity College Dublin for investigation of electrophysiological biomarkers of ALS. This research was undertaken at the Academic Unit of Neurology, where she subsequently continued her research postdoctorally with the support of a prestigious MNDA Non-Clinical Fellowship. Dr McMackin began her role as Assistant Professor in the Discipline of Physiology in October 2022. Dr McMackin's research is supported by the Motor Neurone Disease Association UK, The Irish Health Research Board and Research Motor Neurone, in addition to previous support from the Irish Research Council.

Dr McMackin"s research includes the use of electroencephalography (EEG) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to investigate neural network function in health and neurodegenerative diseases. Her research aims are (i) to improve understanding of the cellular, neurochemical and and network physiology captured by electrophysiological measurements and (ii) to use electrophysiological measurements to progress understanding of neurodegenerative disease mechanisms, to identify diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers and to improve the outcome measures used to test potential therapies in neurological clinical trials. Dr McMackin has a particular interest in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the most common form of Motor Neurone Disease. Dr McMackin is also actively involved in preclinical drug development wet lab studies.
