Padhraig is Chair/Professor of Orthodontics at Trinity College Dublin and was formerly Professor, Consultant and Postgraduate Training Lead in Orthodontics at the Institute of Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London. He is also Honorary Professor at Queen Mary University of London. Padhraig graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 2002 being awarded the Gold Medal, Sheldon Friel Prize, IDA Prize for best results over the 5-year degree and First Class Honours in each subject and overall. During his undergraduate degree, he was also elected a Foundation Scholar to Trinity College Dublin in 1998. Padhraig was awarded MSc. with Distinction in 2007, the British Orthodontic Society Medal for clinical excellence in 2008 and a PhD in 2013. He is Associate Editor of the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, British Dental Journal and Journal of Dentistry. Padhraig has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers and received numerous research awards. He was the first individual to be awarded the Helen E. Dewel Award from the American Academy of Orthodontists (AAO) on three occasions. He has also received the Turpin Award from the AAO (2021), and the Chapman Prize from the British Orthodontic Society on multiple occasions. He has given keynote lectures at numerous international conferences throughout Europe, America, Asia and Australia and was the PR Begg Distinguished Lecturer for the Australian Society of Orthodontics in 2024. Padhraig has co-authored four successful orthodontic textbooks: Clinical Cases in Orthodontics, Functional Appliances: Theory and Practice, Fixed Orthodontic Appliances: A practical guide" and in 2023 Orthodontics: Current Principles and Techniques.

I am particularly interested in clinically relevant research. I have undertaken research examining the comparative effectiveness of a range of fixed and functional appliance variants and have become increasingly involved in research concerning orthodontic retention. More recently, I have developed an interest in the use of innovative 3D technology to support orthodontic diagnostics.
