Project Title
The workplace integration of Indian Migrant Nurses in Irish healthcare settings: a mixed methods study
From
September 2020
To
March 2027
Summary
The Irish healthcare service recruits, and relies on, Indian migrant nurses (IMNs) to address current and predicated shortfalls in the nursing workforce. Indian Migrant Nurses are now the largest nurse migrant group in Ireland with 11,975 IMNs currently registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI 2022). This trend in nurse migration is likely to continue for the foreseeable future given the estimated 47% increase in nurses required to address Sláintecare reform by 2031 (Caulfield et al. 2022; Walton-Roberts 2022). Various challenges obstruct successful IMN integration into the Irish healthcare system. Indian migrant nurses are considered integrated if they are effective leaders who mentor colleagues, participate in quality improvement initiatives, and provide culturally congruent patient care. However, the integration process of IMNs into host countries' healthcare settings, including Ireland, has received scant attention. The results of this study will assist policymakers, nurse educators, and healthcare providers in addressing the integration needs of IMNs, incentivizing IMNs to contribute positively and remain in Irish healthcare.

My PhD, informed by previous research, is entitled "Workplace Integration of Indian Migrant Nurses in the Irish Healthcare setting. I have presented the findings to date in the Migrant Nurses of Ireland conference and the SNM research conference. I have published a scoping review protocol in a high impact JBI associated journal. As I am currently an early career researcher my focus is on the completion of my PhD, the assciated dissemination of the findings and developing the necessary research skills to acheive this goal. I will then return to collborative research. This process will be developmental in nature, leading me to garner research grants improve SNM contributions to research. I am currently involved in the Trinity Centre for Practice and Healthcare Innovation which is positioned with the TCD healthcer research area. My PhD research concerns improving the sucess of Indian migrant nurses' workplace integration, which relates to improving delivery of healthcare in the Irish healthcare setting. Following acceptance of my PhD thesis which uses mixed-methods methodology, I will be able, as an expert, to offer my expertise in the methodology to early career reseachers. Having previously researched and published on the topics of Advanced Practice Nursing, Emergency Nursing, Prescribing Practices, I currently supervise Master's students in these areas. I support these students, encouraging them to publish and present their fidnings. To increase my research activity, profile and funding I continually expand my TCD nased and external networks of resarchers with extensive extensive experience in securing large funding awards. As a PI/co-PI I will be a valuable collborator in developing future funding applications for the SNM. Working with collborative research teams will secure larger awards. Indentifying local, national and European funding bodies, planning and preparing research proposals in partnership with the Research and Innovation Office, will maximise the potential for success
