Dr. Alison Keogh

Assistant Professor (Clinical Medicine Tallaght)

I am a skilled researcher with expertise in both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, focusing on patient needs specific to digital health solutions. My unique blend of transferable skills spans both academia and industry, integrating a strong clinical background in physiotherapy with specialised knowledge in implementation science, usability, behaviour change for health, and patient and public involvement. With over 40 peer-reviewed publications across a variety of healthcare domains, I consistently demonstrate the ability to adapt to new challenges and contribute innovative solutions to existing healthcare problems. My leadership capabilities within my role as an Assistant Professor, are evidenced by my acceptance to the Aurora Women in Leadership programme, alongside my promotion to leadership roles within multi-disciplinary consortia, and my contribution to the development of undergraduate and postgraduate healthcare modules. I have successfully secured competitive funding, including a major award from the Michael J. Fox Foundation ($261,000), and a recently confirmed Health Research Board Emerging Investigator Award (€698,000). I am committed to teamwork and self-driven achievement, as reflected by my progression to the highest levels of international hockey umpiring, culminating in participation in the 2018 and 2022 World Cups and the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. I am driven to further develop my independent research stream with a particular focus on the application and development of digital health solutions in addressing patient and healthcare professional needs. My goal is to integrate these insights into innovative healthcare solutions that enhance patient outcomes and inform future healthcare systems. I am a member of the TCD PG Teaching and Learning committee and a board member of the Irish Platform for Patient Organisations, Science and Industry.

Measuring what matters - in whom it matters - in Parkinson's disease research
From

Summary
Parkinson"s disease (PD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative disorders across the world. Progression of the disease significantly impacts on a person"s mobility and their ability to carry out everyday activities. People living with PD have consistently rated physical mobility, specifically walking, as one of the most important clinical outcomes. Walking activity allows a person with PD to engage in social situations, leisure activities and hobbies and to remain independent. There is however a notable lack of waking outcome measures that are being adopted consistently in research and healthcare practice. One way of capturing and accurately measuring mobility and walking activity is through digital tools and developing digital mobility outcomes (DMOs). These allow a person with PD to be monitored in real-time and in real-world contexts. However we still need to find out which DMOs should be used and validated in PD research. This needs to take into account the perspective of the person living with PD to ensure that digital measures fit within their everyday context. This project integrates and compliments the ongoing work within Mobilise-D, a large EU-funded Innovative Medicines Initiative. The aim of this qualitative project is to explore DMOs from the perspective of the person living with PD to make sure that they are meaningful in what they measure. A further aim is to ensure that these are developed taking into account a diverse range of views to ensure they are inclusive

Our research is interdisciplinary, integrating sports science, biomechanics, physiology, data analytics, and humanities to address complex challenges in athlete well-being, injury prevention, and the management of overtraining, stress and burnout. Synergies arise from merging performance analysis with physiological and psychological insights, ensuring a holistic approach to athlete well-being. Our collaborations extend to industry partners, governing bodies, and medical professionals, fostering dynamic knowledge exchange and real-world application. This integrative approach enhances research impact, bridging gaps between theory, practice, and policy in sport and health science

Digital health; Patient and public involvement and engagement; Behaviour change; Acceptability of digital tools and devices; User perceptions of digital health; Digital mobility outcome measures. I have an interest in the design and implementation of digital tools to support remotely monitoring health in various patient cohorts. Some areas of interest include: - Co-designing tools/interventions for remote patient monitoring or management (e.g. mobile applications; interventions; digital outcome measures) - Exploring the feasibility of implementing tools in practice with healthcare professionals and patients - Exploring whether digital tools such as wearable devices, mobile applications etc., can be effectively used to improve self-management of conditions or elicit health behaviour change (e.g. physical activity, biomarker monitoring etc.) - Understanding stakeholder needs regarding digital health tools - Patient and public involvement in digital health research
