Mr. Adam Shanley

Research Assistant (Public Health & Primary Care)

Adam Shanley is an experienced health program leader and current doctoral researcher at the School of Medicine. He specialises in designing and evaluating interventions that respond to real-world health challenges with innovation and integrity. His work bridges the worlds of practice and research, with a focus on advancing health equity through evidence-based strategies and community-led solutions. His doctoral research is entitled 'Informing digital care pathways in sexual and reproductive health: a mixed-methods evaluation of an online HIV PrEP care pathway in Ireland'. This work explores how digital health models of care in sexual and reproductive health have the potential to expand access, ease pressure on traditional services, and support patient and provider experiences. Adam strongly believes that early and meaningful involvement of those directly impacted by a study can improve both its quality and its overall contribution. Therefore, the online PrEP care pathway under evaluation for this project has been co-designed with PrEP users, community advocates, and clinicians, to ensure equity and acceptablity. Previously, Adam led the MPOWER Programme at HIV Ireland, where he developed peer-led, impact-driven initiatives promoting sexual health among gay and bisexual men. Highlights include launching Ireland"s first HIV self-testing service and securing sustainable funding for a number of high-impact sexual health interventions for gay and bisexual men. He has also been recognised by WHO and ECDC for his role in risk communication and community engagement during the 2022 mpox outbreak. Whether in a research setting or a community-based programme, he is passionate about building systems that center community voices, embrace innovation, and push public health forward in inclusive, practical ways.
