Mr. Joseph Butler

Clinical Senior Lecturer (Surgery)

 


I am a consultant orthopaedic surgeon, with a special interest in academic spine surgery. I completed clinical fellowship training in complex spine deformity and tumour surgery at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, UK; spine trauma and degenerative spine surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA; and spine trauma and degenerative spine surgery at the Rothman Institute, Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, USA. I am a Clinical Principal Investigator at the Trinity Centre for Bioengineering. My h-index is 20, i10-index is 30 and I have 1272 citations of my research work to date. I have published 87 original articles, 24 book chapters and edited 1 book. I was awarded a PhD in Bone Biology by University College Dublin (UCD). I am have been an editor for 7 international journals and a reviewer for 13 journals. I have over 100 presentations at national and international scientific meetings and have 28 national and international awards for my research work. I am a Senior Clinical Lecturer at Trinity College Dublin (TCD), a Senior Specialist Registrar (SpR) Mentor and Trainer for the Irish Institute of Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery (IITOS) and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). I am a Final Medical Year Examiner for both Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and University College Dublin (UCD). I am the Clinical Lead of the Back Pain Screening Clinic at Tallaght University Hospital. I am the Secretary to the Irish Spine Society (ISS) and sit on the Biologics & Basic Research Committee and Robotics & Navigation Committee of the North American Spine Society (NASS). I also have a Masters Degree in Healthcare Management from the Institute of Public Administration (IPA).
